The Weapon of the Word of God

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The word of God is our most powerful weapon in spiritual warfare. In Ephesians 6:17 where the Lord is talking about the armor that a soldier wears when going out to fight the enemy, it is called the “sword of the Spirit”. The reason that it is called the “sword of the Spirit” is because when we are in the battle the Holy Spirit will give us the scriptures that we need to use to fight the enemy that will be effective for the battle at hand. The way you find out the scriptures to use in your particular situation is by seeking the Lord through prayer and the study of His word. You must have an intimate working knowledge of the word of God in order for the Holy Spirit to bring to your remembrance the particular scriptures that you need to fight the battle you are in.

Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

The Greek word for “word” in that scripture is Rhema, which means “spoken”. The Holy Spirit speaks to you the scriptures to use as your sword; the ones that will work for the battle at hand.

Jesus, when fighting the devil in the wilderness, used scriptures that pertained to each one of the devil’s attacks.

  1. Matthew 4:3, 4 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”

  2. Matthew 4:5-7 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’”

  3. Matthew 4:8-10 Again the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”

God knows exactly what scriptures will work to defeat the enemy in your life. When you seek Him, he will give you the weapon of the word of God that you need to use as your sword, but if you never put the word into your heart, the Holy Spirit does not have anything to bring to your remembrance when you need it. A regular feeding on the word of God is necessary for success! God told Joshua when he was getting ready to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land that he needed to meditate on the word of God day and night, follow it’s instructions, and in so doing he would be prosperous and have good success.

Joshua 1:8 “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Notice also that the Lord told him the word shall not depart from your mouth. In other words, keep speaking the word of God. It is as the word is spoken that becomes a weapon. Jesus spoke the word to the devil, He didn’t just think it and win. It is the spoken word that is becomes a sword. Also, notice that the instruction to Joshua was to be a doer of the word. James mentions that in James 1:22, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” If you have known sin in your life you will not be able to defeat the enemy. God told Joshua to make sure he did all that was written in the Book of the Law. God wanted him to be free from sin by obeying His commandments. Sin hinders your prayers and give the enemy a foothold, or a legal right into your life.

Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

The words that a person speaks carry the power to kill or to give life. When God’s word becomes the weapon that is coming out of your mouth it will always work. Make sure that you are speaking death to the enemy and not to another person. The battle is not against other people, it is against the enemy of our souls, the devil.

Ephesians 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against, powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

The weapon of the word of God, when ordered by God, will be absolutely effective in the mission it is sent out to do. But you must get the proper orders to have the right weapon. When you pray, ask the Lord what scriptures you will need to use to fight this particular battle. Trust Him to give you the plan of action that will work. Then when He has given the plan to you, follow it to the letter. Receive it and obey it immediately. Don’t improvise or change it, just obey it, persevere in fighting, and watch the results unfold before you. Thank God for the plan and expect it to work.

Father, I thank You for Your word! I thank You that when I seek You for the plan of action to take in fighting spiritual battles You always give me the right scriptures to use as my sword. Thank You, Father, for causing Your word to go forth with such power! I know that Your word is living and active and it will work in defeating the enemy in my life. Father, I pray this morning, that those who need to use Your word as their weapon in fighting the battles of life will seek You for the right scriptures to use. Give them the Word that will work in their lives, Father. Show them how to fight effectively so the enemy has to flee from them. Empower them by Your Spirit to win! Thank You, Lord, for hearing and answering my prayer because as Your word instructs in Matthew 21:22 I believe that I receive when I pray. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Oh yes, this is pure truth.

His Word is vital for us to walk in this life as over comers and if we don’t stay in the word everyday of our lives we are sunk and how can Holy Spirit bring back to rememberance something that is not even there in the first place?

The Word of God is our life and strength and power and then when we pray we get the Rhema Word from Him personally that will fit just perfectly in our situcation and we do this day by day because each new day brings new battles that we have a promise from heaven above that we will win evertime just so long as we stay in the Word and confess and profess the written Word of God and the Rhema Word of God.

This is a daily battle that is spiritual and I for one just got caught up with one and have just come out smelling like a rose once again.

I have a Mary heart in a Martha world and this has set me free from focusing on the wrong thing instead of Jesus who is the Word and the Word is Jesus.

    What more can I say?

    Nothing.

    The Word says it all.

Another great and vital one for our over coming life style in Jesus.

    Thank you Avie

Bobbie, having a Mary heart in a Martha world is good according to what Jesus said in Luke 10:38-42. He said only “one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her”. Enjoy your time with the Lord! Focus on what He wants you to do and He will direct you to those things in the natural that need to be done!

      God Bless!
