It’s Time For Your Breakthrough!

It's Time For Your Breakthrough

1 Chronicles 14:8-11 NKJV Now when the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. And David heard of it and went out against them. Then the Philistines went and made a raid on the Valley of Rephaim. And David inquired of God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” The LORD said to him, “Go up, for I will deliver them into your hand.” So they went up to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there. Then David said, “God has broken through my enemies by my hand like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore they called the name of that place Baal Perazim.

Have you ever felt like the hoards of hell had suddenly been released against you? This is the way it must have seemed to David after hearing that God had anointed him king over all Israel and all of a sudden ALL the Philistines were out to get him. They were looking to destroy him before he ever had the chance to lead God’s people in the anointing that God had placed upon him. I’m sure he might have felt like Paul described himself in his ministry in 1 Corinthians 16:9 “For a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.” But David, like Paul, wasn’t frightened by the appearance of the enemy; he didn’t turn and run as many of us would have done when presented with the same set of problems. No, instead David went out against them. They met up for battle in the Valley of Rephaim, which means the Valley of Giants. He was faced with ALL the giants of Philistine, but even though they appeared as giants to him, he knew that his God was bigger than anything his enemy could array against him. He prayed to God for direction, heard what God said would work in his battle against them, and proceeded to fight and defeat his enemies.

Are you faced with an enemy or two today? Sometimes it seems like ALL the devil’s giants are coming against you. Have you prayed for God to show you how to effectively deal with and conquer those things that are standing in your way and keeping you from fulfilling the plan that God has for your life? David acknowledged that his victory came through God moving through his hand in giving him the direction and ability to know how to fight and win against his enemies. He said that God was the One who broke through his enemies by his hand. In other words, David saw himself as just a vessel to be used as a tool of destruction to his enemies. God was the one who did the work. I’m sure that you, like me, have prayed many times for a certain situation to just be “over”; that God would just bring it to an end. But maybe God is wanting to show you how to stand up and fight for yourself. He has equipped us with all the power of God and authority over our enemies.

Luke 10:19 “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

Jesus told His disciples this as they were going out to minister His healing power to those that they would come into contact with in their own cities and towns. He later gave that same authority to those of us who would follow after Him when He gave us the great commission to go and make disciples of all nations. We have been anointed to destroy the works of the enemy in our lives just as Jesus destroyed the devil in the lives of those to which He ministered.

Spiritual breakthrough

David, in that battle against the Philistines, changed the name of that valley from the Valley of Giants to Baal Perazim, which means “Master of Breakthroughs”. He no longer saw his enemies as giants before him; obstacles of impossibilities, but as enemies subject to the power of God through him. God is the Master of our Breakthroughs, just as he was to David. When we obey His direction He will breakthrough the enemies’ forces that are arrayed against us to bring victory in the midst of the battle.

1 Chronicles 14:13-17 Then the Philistines once again made a raid on the valley. Therefore David inquired again of God, and God said to him, “You shall not go up after them; circle around them, and come upon them in front of the mulberry trees. “And it shall be, when you hear a sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then you shall go out to battle, for God has gone out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.” So David did as God commanded him, and they drove back the army of the Philistines from Gibeon as far as Gezer. Then the fame of David went out into all lands, and the LORD brought the fear of him upon all nations.

David had no more than brushed himself off from one battle until the enemy was coming against him again. How many times have you felt like you were fighting the same enemy over and over again? You just couldn’t seem to get the victory until you would find yourself going at it again. That’s what happened to David the second time. Only this time when He consulted the Lord for the battle plan He gave him a different one. He told him not to go up against them as he had before, but this time he was to circle around them and come upon them in front of the mulberry trees. He would have to listen for the right time and sound of God’s voice to go out to battle against them.

Sometimes in our zeal to win the battle that we seem to be fighting over and over again, we forget to consult the Lord about how to conduct this battle, thinking it will require the same battle plan as the last time. But God may have a different plan for you to use in fighting the enemy that will be more effective. David realized that God is not into formulas, but He is into relationship. He is a God of intimacy, not rituals. What worked one time may not be the way God intends for you to fight to win this time. It will take you seeking Him instead of plodding along the same old way as you have in the past. If what you are doing does not seem to be working it may be time to consult the Lord for a new battle plan.

God is the God of Breakthroughs. Will you allow Him to breakthrough your enemy’s battle line through you? When Israel was getting ready to go into the Promised Land the Lord gave them these instructions.

Deuteronomy 9:1-3 NKJV “Hear, O Israel: You are to cross over the Jordan today, and go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven, “a people great and tall, the descendants of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the descendants of Anak?’ “Therefore understand today that the LORD your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and bring them down, before you; so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the LORD has said to you.”

God didn’t tell His people they would not encounter giants or enemies in their Promised Land. No, instead He reminded them of how they had heard about the strength of those cities and nations and the people who were the giants of Anak who lived there. He told them, however, that He was going before them to destroy the enemy, but that they would have to dispossess them and drive them out of the land that He had given them. God was giving them the victory, but they still had to fight the battles.

That’s the way it is for us as well. Life will present challenges. Jesus said that in this world we would encounter tribulations. But He went on to say in John 16:33 “but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” The Amplified Bible says “but be of good cheer [take courage, be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]”

Friends, the enemies that you face are no match for you when the Master of Breakthroughs is working through you to defeat them. He has made you more than a conqueror through Him who loved you. (Romans 8:37) Through Jesus Christ, you can do all things, for greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. (Philippians 4:13 & 1 John 4:4)

Sword of fire

So, take up your Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, pray for God’s direction and go out and slash the enemy to pieces. You are the victor when the Master of Breakthroughs is working through you!

Father, I thank You for the power and anointing of the Holy Spirit upon the lives of Your people. I thank You for the breakthroughs that You are working in the lives of those who are seeking their direction for battle from you and following as you instruct them. Thank You for the victory! I pray for those who may feel weak and ineffective in fighting their giants. I pray that You will reveal to them that they are powerful in and through Your strength. I pray that they will see that You hold the key to their breakthrough and are waiting for them to seek Your face for the battle plan. Thank You, Lord, for giving us the victory as we go out in the power of Your Spirit to defeat and destroy the work of the enemy in our lives. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
